The tread width of the tyre is provided by the first number. The number is provided in millimetres. In the case of the 185/70 R15 tyre it is 185 mm. The height of the tyre is designated by the second number (it is a percentage ratio to the tyre's tread width, here 70% out of 185 mm). The "R" in the tyre's size denotes its radial construction.
