What is the difference between a centring ring and a spacer?

A centring ring is a component used during mounting to fit an aluminium rim to a car hub. It is used to centre the rim on the hub and to reduce the size of the centre hole.

The spacer, unlike the ring, is mainly intended to improve the appearance of the car. Fitting it allows the rim to be more exposed by increasing the offset within the wheel arch.
